Founded in 1791, the Albany Institute of History & Art is New York's oldest museum. The site includes three different structures: a 1920s Classical Revival building, a Beaux-Arts mansion, and a modern glass building which connects the two older structures. The Institute is home to more than 35,000 objects which document the history of the Hudson Valley and its importance as a crossroads of culture. Its collections include paintings, sculpture, works on paper, ceramics, furniture, and other historical artifacts. Permanent exhibitions include one of the largest collections of Hudson River School paintings; a history of Ancient Egypt—and Albany's connection to it; and other fine art, ceramics, and furniture; along with temporary exhibitions, which change three times a year. There is a museum shop on the premises. The Albany Institute's galleries and public spaces are fully wheelchair accessible. Large-print exhibition guides are available at the admissions desk.

Founded by the first president of the Beech-Nut Packing Company, the museum is dedicated to the art and history of the Mohawk Valley. Their collection of American art includes works by Gilbert Stuart, Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, Albert Bierstadt, George Inness, William M. Chase, Thomas Benton, Childe Hassam, Mary Cassatt, Georgia O'Keeffe, Andrew Wyeth, Maurice Prendergast, and Robert Henri. The Mohawk Valley collection includes photographs, diaries, letters, and portraits of individuals and businesses of both local and national importance. The Beech-Nut Packing Company Collection includes photographs of early factory life, company scrapbooks, and marketing materials. There is a museum shop on the premises. The Museum is wheelchair-accessible, and there is parking available both in our paved parking lot and along Erie Boulevard and Church Street.

With a collection started in the 19th century, the Bennington Museum has made its home in a former Catholic church since 1923. This long-standing collection focuses on the history and culture of Vermont and the surrounding regions. Historical exhibits include 18th century furniture and decorative arts, one of the most historically significant quilts from 1863, as well as a letter written by George Washington. Traveling exhibits and rotations from the permanent collection make up the art galleries, which range from historical portraits from America's early years to more modern fare, including works by Helen Frankenthaler and Paul Feeley. The museum also holds the largest collection of works by 20th-century folk artist Grandma Moses. The Regional History Room (with limited hours), features a wealth of documents related to New England families and their genealogy. Also on the museum grounds is the George Aiken Wildflower Trail, a path showcasing many of the native plant species of the region. The museum is wheelchair accessible, and ASL or verbal description tours are available upon request. There is a museum store on site. Founded in 1950, the museum was established for Sterling and Francine Clark to share their large art collection with the public. Since then, this significant collection has continued to grow so that it now includes paintings, drawings, prints, sculpture, photographs, and decorative arts from the 14th to the early 20th century, primarily from the United States and Europe. In addition to permanent and changing exhibitions inside the galleries, works are also displayed across its 140-acres of lawns, meadows, and walking trails. There is a café and a gift shop on the premises. All buildings and public areas are fully accessible and comply with American with Disabilities (ADA) standards, including fully accessible restrooms. Not all visitors at the Schenectady County Airport are there to travel—many are going to the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, which occupies two of the airport's buildings and a large Airpark. Begun as a way to preserve the history and legacy of aviation in the state of New York, the museum now boasts a collection of over 20 planes, a virtual reality vehicle ride, and thousands of archival photographs and documents. The indoor galleries cover many aspects of the history of aviation, with exhibits on Amelia Earhart, flight during WWI and WWII, and NASA's lunar exploits. There is also a vast research library onsite, featuring many historical documents. All of this in an airport that itself is important to the history of aviation in New York—one of the first landings there was by Charles Lindbergh, and it has variously been an aircraft manufacturing site, an Army Air Force base, and a test flight facility. The museum is ADA compliant and offers accessible parking lots. There is a gift shop onsite. The museum is only open on the weekends; check the website for hours.

Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum which celebrates the history and legacy of the Shakers, a religious group that lived communally and promoted values of equality and pacificism. This site, on the National Register of Historic Places, was active until 1960. The grounds consist of 20 historic buildings and a working farm and garden, surrounded by 750 acres of pasture, woods and hiking trails. Of particular interest are the Round Stone Barn (1826), the Brick Building that served as a dormitory (1830), and the Museum which houses permanent and changing exhibitions. Staff demonstrate traditional Shaker trade crafts on a rotating schedule in various locations. There is a café and gift shop on the premises. The Hyde Collection is an historic house and museum complex with a collection of European and American art that spans centuries. Housed in an Italian Renaissance-style villa built in 1912, the permanent collection consists of more than 5,000 objects, comprised of paintings, works on paper, sculpture, and decorative arts, as well as furniture and textiles. Highlights include Old Master works (Botticelli, El Greco, Rembrandt, Rubens, and Tiepolo) and works by important American artists (Eakins, Hassam, Homer, Ryder, Whistler, Albers, Gottlieb, Hartigan, Kelly, LeWitt, Motherwell, and Rauschenberg). Five galleries present changing exhibitions which include both works drawn from the collection and art from outside the institution. There is a museum shop on the premises. The entire complex is accessible by wheelchair with two exceptions: the guest bedroom downstairs and Mrs. Hyde's bedroom upstairs in the house.

The Iroquois Museum is dedicated to sharing the history, culture, and art of the Haudenosaunee people. The design of the modern building that houses the museum was informed by the traditional Iroquois elm bark longhouses found in the area 400 years ago. On the grounds is a 45-acre nature park with a number of trails for walking, as well as two 19th century log homes moved from the Six Nations Reserve, Ontario, rebuilt by a Mohawk construction company.

Sitting across from the oldest thoroughbred racetrack in the country, the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame is dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of horse racing in the U.S. Beginning life as a seasonal exhibit in a casino, the museum's grounds and collection have expanded greatly into the 45,000 square foot facility it occupies today. Presenting a history older than the country itself, the museum's galleries feature memorabilia across more than three centuries: sculptures of horses, paintings of jockeys, and racing trophies abound, with plenty of information to put them in context. The hall of fame is an interactive exhibit covering nearly 500 inductees— horses, jockeys, trainers, and other important figures. There is even a kid's gallery featuring a barn, a life-sized horse model for grooming, and jockey clothing to try on. Aside from the permanent exhibits, the museum hosts special exhibitions highlighting different aspects of the sport. The museum is partially accessible, including entrances and restrooms, and features a gift shop.

Olana is the former home, studio, and grounds of 19th century Hudson River School artist Frederic Edwin Church. The unique main building is an eclectic mixture of styles, featuring stencil work on both the exterior and interior based on Church's travels in the Middle East and elsewhere. The interior of the house is much as it was when the artist was alive and includes a number of paintings by Church, his mentor Thomas Cole, and other artists within his circle. The 250-acre grounds represent a landscape designed by Church, through which visitors may walk on the many trails available. There is a Visitor Center and gift shop on the premises. The Frederic Church Center for Art and Landscape has a café. The nearby Hudson River Skywalk, a pedestrian walkway across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, connects the site with the Thomas Cole National Historic Site.

The galleries have around 30 cars on display at any given time, selected from a rotating cast. This National Historic Landmark and National Historic Site is home to the historic house and studios of painter Thomas Cole (1801-1848), founder of the Hudson River School of American landscape. Visitors may visit the historic buildings, explore the grounds, and view exhibitions. The nearby Hudson River Skywalk, a pedestrian walkway across the Rip Van Winkle Bridge, connects the site with Olana, the home of Frederick Church, another important Hudson River School painter. The Underground Railroad Education Center is located in the historic Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence in Albany, once a regional headquarters for the Underground Railroad. (A freed slave, Stephen Myers was an important member of the abolitionist movement in the United States, sharing the stage at events with Frederick Douglass, and with his wife Harriet, helping those escaping slavery for many decades.) Now housing a museum dedicated to the regional and national history of the Underground Railroad, this Greek Revival-style townhouse has been restored to its 1850s condition. This story is told through historical documents and the restoration of historical sites. Tours are available but must be scheduled ahead of time—check the center's website for hours and information. Elevators are available and there is a gift shop on site.

Hands-on exhibit areas include “World Gallery,” “Home & Family Life,” “Animal Preserve Research Center,” “World Music,” “Textile Marketplace,” “World Fashion, and “Art Studio & Gallery.” There is an interactive play space suited for children ages 4 to 12.
